Credit Card Phishing

Credit card phishing is an activity which involves hacking of a third person’s credit card information. With the number of internet users increasing day by day, new techniques have also evolved to hack their identity to gain some illegal benefits. Internet offers several advantages which benefits it’s users in many ways. It imposes an equal threat too when it involves credit cards, for example, in making online transactions.

Phishing is involved in almost all sectors starting from one’s mail id to buying things online. Especially in banking sector, some hackers create a website making they appear genuine and authenticated. Just like PayPal, eBay and other reliable sites, they cheat the customers to buy things using their credit cards. What happens ultimately is that the person’s credit card password is hacked. The site owner then use the credit card details in a wrong way making the genuine owner puzzled.

In many cases the credit card user will get a mail from a so-called reliable source asking them to give their personal information for verification purposes. The credit card users too will think that it is genuine and give away all their personal details such as social security number, credit card number including the password, security code and date of birth. Most common and frequently occurring way of credit card phishing is that the user will get an incoming call to their landline telephone number or personal mobile phone number asking them to give all the credit card details in order to protect them from phishing. Once we give the details their job of hacking our credit cards becomes very easy.

Some precautions can be followed to protect ourselves from this threat. When we get any mail from a standard online site asking us to give our credit card details, the first thing we have to do is to make sure that the mail is from a genuine source and the requisitions they ask are for our own benefits or not. In most cases, eBay or PayPal do not send a mail to the users asking for their credit card pin codes. MasterCard, Visa and other credit card providers allow the users to type some information when the user sets up his profile and chooses his password. When some online transaction has to be made, the banking site will automatically pop-up that personal information which was typed by the user. When there is any change in the information which we provided earlier or if the information  does not pop-out at all, the user can  refrain himself from typing the password and report it immediately to the respective bank.

Though many anti-phishing sites have been created to help the genuine users, it is always advisable to be careful while making online transactions.
